A Move to the United Kingdom
In 2005, Semal took a bold step and moved to the UK to
pursue an undergraduate degree in engineering. Immersed in a new culture, she
discovered her passion for product design, which eventually led her to
Cranfield University, where she earned a master’s degree in design thinking and
creative problem-solving. Her coursework included modules like Customer
Lifestyle Engineering, which sparked her interest in creating innovative
solutions that resonate with people’s needs.
Exploring the Corporate World
Semal’s professional journey began at Dunnhumby, a data
science firm, where she honed her skills in understanding customer behavior.
Later, she joined Deloitte in London, working in the Visualization and Insight
team. Here, she specialized in data visualization and user-experience design,
contributing to technology products. However, her curiosity and drive to expand
her impact motivated her to explore beyond the corporate world of big data.
The Yale School of Management Experience
In 2016, Semal decided to pursue an MBA at the prestigious
Yale School of Management. During her time there, she embraced opportunities to
grow both academically and personally. She participated in projects like the
MBA Impact Investing Network and Training, where her team developed early-stage
investment ideas. She also contributed to initiatives like redesigning a women
and children’s shelter to support diverse learning styles, reflecting her
commitment to creating meaningful change.
A Stint at Adobe
As an MBA Product Management Intern at Adobe, Semal worked
on developing strategies for a new product aimed at an emerging customer
segment. She conducted research to validate the product-market fit, identified
key customer needs, and proposed messaging strategies to address their pain
points. This experience further sharpened her understanding of customer-centric

The Birth of HomeTree Coworking
In 2018, Semal co-founded HomeTree Coworking in Colombo, Sri
Lanka, the first mindfulness-focused coworking space in the region. HomeTree
disrupted traditional coworking models by blending mindfulness techniques with
productivity science. Its vision was to create a conscious community of
co-creators, fostering collaboration and meaningful connections in the
