Biography of Shreyans Mehta: Co-founder and CEO of MedCords- Entrepreneur
Biography of Shreyans Mehta:
Shreyans Mehta, a determined entrepreneur from Kota,
Rajasthan, embarked on a journey to revolutionize healthcare in rural India. As
a co-founder of MedCords, Shreyans leveraged his past experiences and
educational background to address significant gaps in the healthcare system.
His career began with roles at Hero Moto Corp Ltd and IndiaReads.com, where he
honed his skills in strategic planning and technology. With a Bachelor's degree
in Engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology, Shreyans was well-equipped
to tackle complex problems, but it was his firsthand experience in rural
settings that truly shaped his vision for MedCords.
Early Challenges and Insight
Shreyans’ journey into healthcare innovation started when he
observed his father's medical practice. Despite his father's efforts, Shreyans
noticed that many patients were dissatisfied due to the brevity of
consultations and lack of consistent medical history. Doctors often spent only
a couple of minutes with each patient, and many villagers faced difficulties
accessing reliable medical care. Shreyans realized that medical records were
often fragmented, and many people relied on local chemists for medical advice
rather than consulting doctors. This gap in healthcare accessibility and
efficiency became the foundation for his new venture.

The Birth of MedCords
Determined to make a difference, Shreyans invested his
savings into developing a solution. He partnered with Nikhil Baheti and Saida
Dhanavath, both skilled in technology, to create MedCords in 2017. The startup
aimed to simplify healthcare by connecting rural patients with doctors through
a digital platform. By leveraging mobile technology, MedCords sought to provide
a seamless experience for patients, doctors, and local pharmacists. The team
developed two key applications: Aayu, for patient interactions, and Sehat
Sathi, which empowered local chemists to support patients remotely.
Scaling Up and Reaching More Villages
MedCords quickly gained traction as it expanded its services to multiple states. By 2015, Shreyans had scaled the model to cover 800 villages across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. This rapid growth was driven by the need to address the healthcare disparities in rural areas. MedCords focused on integrating local medical stores into its network, enabling villagers to consult with doctors from a distance and manage their health records digitally. This approach not only improved access to medical care but also supported local businesses.
Facing Unique Challenges
Running MedCords presented unique challenges, especially
when working directly with villagers. Shreyans and his team found themselves
involved in various aspects of village life, including addressing domestic
disputes and understanding local needs. This hands-on approach was crucial for
building trust and effectively implementing their technology. The team realized
that merely providing a digital platform was not enough; they had to engage
with the community to ensure the technology was used effectively and met their
needs.
Innovating for Better Health Records
One of the major issues identified was the lack of proper
medical record-keeping among villagers. Many prescriptions and medical records
were lost or damaged, leading to repeated tests and increased treatment costs.
MedCords aimed to address this by digitizing health records for millions of
people. By creating a system where records were easily accessible and securely
stored, MedCords aimed to reduce the burden on patients and improve the efficiency
of medical consultations.
Economic Impact and Local Partnerships
MedCords’ model included partnering with local medical
stores, known as ‘sehat sathis,’ to provide telemedicine services. This
partnership was mutually beneficial: it allowed pharmacies to increase their
revenue by 25 to 30 percent and provided villagers with better healthcare
services. The ‘sehat sathis’ became crucial in bridging the gap between
patients and doctors, enhancing the overall healthcare experience in rural
areas.
Expanding Reach and Growth
The startup's impact has been substantial, covering nine
lakh people across 2,300 villages in four districts of Rajasthan. MedCords
continues to grow, adding around 5,000 new users daily. The company recently
secured $1 million in funding to further expand its operations and aims to reach
over five crore people in the next three years. This growth underscores the
startup’s success in addressing a critical need in rural healthcare and its potential
for further expansion.
Looking Forward
Shreyans Mehta’s vision for MedCords is to become the most
trusted healthcare platform for rural India. His extensive travels and research
have equipped him with deep insights into the challenges faced by rural
populations. MedCords represents a significant step forward in making quality
healthcare accessible and affordable for everyone, regardless of their
location. With ongoing innovation and community engagement, MedCords is poised
to continue its mission of transforming healthcare in Bharat.
